Pneumatics

This course introduces the basic physics of energy, work, and power as related to pneumatics. It explains gas laws, flow, pressure, and the basic components of a pneumatic system. It includes air preparation and conditioning, calculation of force and torque, and graphic symbols. It emphasizes the importance of schematics in technical communication related to pneumatic circuits. This course has no prerequisites.

Lesson 1 - Pneumatic Fundamentals

The course introduces the basic physics of energy, work, and power as related to pneumatics. Explains gas laws, flow and pressure application, and basic components of a pneumatic system.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define six basic pneumatic terms.
    • List and explain four laws that are core to pneumatics.
    • Calculate force and power.

Lesson 2 - Pneumatic Compressors

Discusses how compressed air is stored and cooled. Also explains the different types of compressors and their graphic symbols.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Explain how manufacturers rate air compressors.
    • List and describe four types of displacement compressors.
    • List and describe six compressor support components.

Lesson 3 - Pneumatics Air Preparation

The course covers air preparation and conditioning components, specifically their functionality and application. It also discusses corresponding graphic symbols.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • List and describe four types of compressed air dryers.
    • Explain the purpose of each component in the FRL trio.
    • Describe the differences between three types of air filters.

Lesson 4 - Air Conductors and Distribution

Describes various types of air line conductors. Including steel pipe, copper tubing, and plastic tubing. The discussion continues by examining how their different applications work together within the network.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • List and describe four types of air conductors.
    • Define primary and secondary distribution lines.
    • List and describe three types of air distribution systems.

Lesson 5 - Pneumatic Actuators

Covers the various types of pneumatic actuators, how they function, and their schematic symbols. Also discusses the basic pneumatic formulas for calculating force and torque, in relation to pneumatic actuators.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • List and describe four types of pneumatic cylinders.
    • List the five types of air motors.
    • Explain the advantages of a rack and pinion actuator.

Lesson 6 - Pneumatic Control Valves

Teaches the various types of valves and their graphic symbols. It also discusses valve functions and applications.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Explain the operating principles of a power valve and control valve.
    • List and describe eight specific pneumatic control valve types.

Lesson 7 - Vacuum Control Fundamentals

Course discusses the basis for understanding pneumatic vacuum control. Explains the basic physics of vacuum and how it applies to the pneumatic control system. Continues with a look at the vacuum control components as well as their graphic symbols.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define vacuum as it relates to pneumatics. 
    • Describe two methods for creating a vacuum in pneumatic systems. 
    • List and describe three industrial applications for a vacuum.
Lesson 8 - Pneumatic Symbols and Circuits

Course covers graphic symbols, their function, and method of operation. Emphasizes that graphic schematics are critical for technical communication in the pneumatic circuit.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Explain the purpose of graphic symbols and its elementary forms.
    • Recognize the difference between line symbols.
    • Recognize the graphic symbols for 14 pneumatic components in a pneumatic system.
