This course introduces the physics of energy, work, and power in relation to mechanics. It introduces simple machines and their application. It describes linear actuators, mechanical clutches and brakes, anti-friction bearings, gears and gear terminology, belt and chain drives, and mechanical couplings, including their principles of operation and applications. This course has no prerequisites.

Lesson 1 - Fundamentals of Mechanics

Introduce the basic physics of energy, work, and power in relation to mechanics. It also discusses simple machines and their application.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define four basic mechanical terms.
    • Describe the law of inertia.
    • Identify simple machines and their application to mechanical devices.
    • Calculate speed.

Lesson 2 - Mechanical Actuators

Describes the types of linear actuators, their function, and their application. It also discusses the formulas for calculating load and torque in relation to linear actuators.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define mechanical linear actuator. 
    • List and describe five types of mechanical linear actuators.
    • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of ball screws.
    • Calculate torque and load. 

Lesson 3 - Mechanical Clutches

Describes the types of mechanical clutches, principles of operation, and applications.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define the purpose of a mechanical clutch.
    • List and describe five types of mechanical clutches.
    • Identify mechanical clutch applications.

Lesson 4 - Mechanical Brakes

Explores the types of mechanical brakes, their operation, and application.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define the purpose of a mechanical brake.
    • List and describe four types of mechanical brakes.
    • Identify mechanical brake applications.
    • Calculate resistance torque.

Lesson 5 - Bearings

Discusses the various types of anti-friction bearings. Goes on to explain bearing terminology and application.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • List the three categories of bearings.
    • Explain how radial and thrust loads act when applied to bearings.
    • Describe six types of anti-friction bearings. 
    • Define seven terms relevant to bearings.
    • Identify bearing applications.

Lesson 6 - Gears

Explains gear terminology, the various types of gears, and the application of gearbox drives.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define 13 terms relevant to gears.
    • List and describe five types of gears. 
    • Identify gearbox drive applications.
    • Calculate gearbox ratio.

Lesson 7 - Belt and Chain Drives

Introduces the various types of belt and chain drives. The course further explains terminology and applications for belt and chain drives.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • List and describe two types of belt drives.
    • Define eight basic belt drive terms.
    • Calculate horsepower transmitted by a V-belt.
    • List the three basic types of chain drives.

Lesson 8 - Mechanical Couplings

Explores the different types of mechanical couplings, their principles of operation, and applications.

Learning Objectives:
After this course, the learner will be able to:

    • Define the purpose of a mechanical coupling.
    • List and describe ten types of mechanical couplings.
    • Identify coupling applications.
